What can I expect during the USCIS medical exam?

During a USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) immigration, physical, a designated civil surgeon (a physician authorized by USCIS to perform immigration medical examinations) typically conducts a series of examinations and tests to determine if the applicant meets the health requirements for immigration to the United States. Here’s what is typically done during a USCIS medical exam:

  1. Medical History Review: The civil surgeon will review the applicant’s medical history, including any past or current illnesses, surgeries, or conditions.
  2. Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination will be conducted, which may include checking vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, etc.), and examining the eyes, ears, nose, throat, chest, abdomen, and other relevant areas.
  3. Tuberculosis (TB) Test: The applicant will typically receive a Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) or a blood test (IGRA – Interferon Gamma Release Assay) to check for tuberculosis.
  4. Vaccination Status: The civil surgeon will review the applicant’s vaccination records and administer any necessary vaccinations to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration requirements.
  5. Syphilis Test: A blood test for syphilis is usually required for applicants 15 years and older.
  6. Gonorrhea Test (if applicable): This may be required for certain applicants, depending on their age and marital status.
  7. Mental Health Evaluation: While not always required, the civil surgeon may assess the applicant’s mental health if there are indications or concerns.
  8. Drug Test (if applicable): Some applicants may be required to undergo a drug test.
  9. Chest X-ray (if applicable): If the Tuberculin Skin Test or IGRA is positive or has a history of tuberculosis, a chest X-ray may be performed to evaluate the condition further.
  10. Form Completion: The civil surgeon will complete the necessary forms, such as Form I-693 (Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record), with the examination results and seal the envelope. This sealed envelope is then given to the applicant to submit to USCIS as part of their immigration application.

It’s important to note that specific requirements may vary depending on the applicant’s age, country of origin, and medical history. Additionally, the list above is a general overview, and the actual procedures may vary slightly based on the civil surgeon’s judgment and USCIS guidelines at the time of the examination.

Consult the designated civil surgeon or USCIS for the most up-to-date information and requirements.

If you do the labs ordered by the USCIS civil surgeon within 24 hours of the first appointment, it usually takes a week if no additional findings regarding TB or any other lab come negative.
